Here’s something you probably don’t know about me, back in my teenage years I had terrible acne. It was so bad I couldn’t even wash my face without popping a pimple or two and to this day I have scars all over my face because, yes I did pick my skin. Thank goodness, my mom is a cosmetologist and routinely cares for my skin now that I’m older. But in my younger years, the struggle was real for me. I felt unattractive and not beautiful which, now that I think about it, was a total waste of my life force and energy back then.
My mom did say that my acne was getting worse because of my addiction to fried foods (I loved chips, fried chicken, basically anything fried seemed delicious to me at the time). I, of course, chose not to listen, and frankly, the thought that food had anything to do with my skin sounded ridiculous to me.
My mom, in an effort to help me to ease my pain, and of course to ease some of her own discomfort, took me to the doctor who immediately put me on a birth control pill. Now, I’m gonna be honest, it did work. As long as I was on the pill (and I was on it for five years) my acne cleared out completely, however, once I got off the pill, not only did my acne came right back, but I also gained weight, had an insatiable appetite (again for sweet and fried food) and grew hair on my face and body and in other weird places. At the time I didn’t know what the heck was going on, but now I know that my hormonal system was out of control. I have been off the pill for 12 years now but I still work on balancing my hormones and clearing out my skin.
One of the things I found super helpful, along with eating foods that support the liver and help the skin, is to have a dedicated skin regimen which includes regular cleansing and moisturizing the skin. Usually, oily skin will be prone, so it’s important to use the right skin care and the right habits in place in order to support your natural beauty and glow.
If you have been struggling with oily but dry or dry to oily skin, redness, rosacea, eczema and other skin issues you’re going to love this episode.
